The Technology Myth

A common misconception about technology is that young adults and teenagers are more proficient users than those over 35. The technology age, it would appear, had bypassed the Baby Boomers and Generation X.


As a technology educator I have great pleasure dispelling this myth. In particular, working with teenagers gives me an insight into how they use technology and why. I've found there are some aspects of technology where teens and young adults excel whilst in other key skills their knowledge is sadly lacking.


Undoubtedly teens and young adults are amazing texters. I simply can't text like they do and am all fingers and thumbs. This can be explained, in part, by a research study that found texting has altered the teenage brain so that their fingers have more dexterity than an adults. They can text a message via satellite in the time I'm dithering about trying to insert a full stop.


Also, their mobile phone relationship is a highly personalised one. The phone is their lifeline and they use them as watches, calenders, communicating and organising their daily lives. The installed apps can guide, amuse or entertain them non-stop so that their attachment to the device becomes all consuming. This mobile phone obsession rarely extends to those over 40, who have difficulty understanding the key role a mobile phone plays with the younger generation.


The phone is also hugely popular as a means of social networking. Teenagers are not necessarily engaging online by using superior technology skills - most of them are watching videos or sending messages which requires little skill. The more challenging aspects of technology - using software still needs to be taught.


I believe technology efficiency requires three key skills regardless of age:


Interest
Aptitude
Practice


Interest: If you have an interest in something then you tend to pursue it. To understand how to use software you need to read books, watch tutorials, join a class or find some other means of tuition. If you are keen to enhance your technology skills then nothing can prevent the joy of learning.


Aptitude: Having taught many people to use various software I've concluded that some people have more aptitude than others. Why are some people better basketball players than others? Why are others superior cooks to their peers? What makes a better driver, cyclist, swimmer, writer? It is aptitude. We cannot be good at everything but we can excel at some. People who enjoy using technology generally have an aptitude for it. They will take risks, experiment with software, tinker when they get the chance and most importantly they rarely panic if something unexpected occurs.


Practice: I've taught software for years but if I don't keep practising then I forget it. For example, I teach a lot of Adobe software like Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Indesign and Premiere. However, if I go too long without teaching software I start to forget things - quickly. The only way to stay on top is to practice. The more you practice the better you get. The better you get the more you practice.


It is never too late to enhance your technology skills. You may find you have an aptitude for it. What you won't find though is that age makes the slightest bit of difference.

Benefits of Being an Early Adopter of Technology

Each innovation in technology has a life-cycle and whether you adopt in the beginning, middle, or end; you are a part of this cycle. If you are the type of person that had an HDTV in 2001 or a Nokia N95 in 2007, then you understand the concept of being an early adopter. This term refers to the second position in the technology life-cycle behind "innovators" and is made up of people who are usually very tech-savvy and willing to spend money to be among the first with a new gadget. There are a few benefits and even drawbacks of being an early adopter, but without these folks, there would not be the level of innovation that we enjoy today.

Early adopters, more often than not, are the first consumer "votes" that a company will have on a new piece of technology. What is meant by votes in this context is that in a supply and demand market, a company needs to have demand for the product or technology. While most times the early adopters will be faced with much higher prices and sub-par products than compared to the later stages of the adoption life-cycle, there are many reasons to become an early adopter.

Companies will usually have a higher level of contact with their early adopters because they tend to be more knowledgeable and provide candid answers. This can lead to a satisfying feeling of having your voice heard about something you are passionate. Most times this feedback can lead to much more gratifying iterations of the technology in the future. For example, people who bought an iPhone in 2007 are a big part of the evolution the iPhone has seen since its inception.

There is something to be said about bragging rights and being an early adopter can definitely get you something to brag about (if you have nerdy friends). Having the newest and coolest gadget on the market is always a great conversation piece in a geeky crowd. Even as the technology get more popular and moves through the life-cycle, you can always find a way to weave a story into conversation about how you had the toy before everyone else did.

Early adopters tend to be thought-leaders in their circles when it comes to technology. This may not be a benefit, as much as a fact of the matter statement. Most times there will be a person in a circle that tends to always have the new gadget on the market and talk about the benefits and disadvantages to the tech. There is a gratifying feeling of having the engaged attention of people by talking to them about something they are not familiar with.

There are many benefits to adopting technology early. The main one is that if you would like to see something continue, evolve, and improve then someone has to buy it first. While most times early adopters will spend much more money on gadgets, the majority would not have these great products had it not been for the people passionate enough to fork over the money first.

A Primer on Cloud Technology and What "Cloud" Implies

I've been writing a lot about cloud technology in general, as of late. And the thing that most readers tend to wonder is: "Isn't "cloud" just a euphemism for "the internet" in a way?" Well, in a way, yes. But on the whole and on bulk, I'd have to say no. And here's why.

"The internet" is the network itself; it's raw; it's HTTP; it's TCP; it's a network-with the servers, routers [huge servers and routers] that collectively make up this thing we refer to as the internet. And via "this collective", we connect to webpages, websites, and other technologies and services. Ultimately, though, the internet is like a super duper phone line-nothing more. And what can you do with just a phone line? Nothing really, and that's just the point.

What do you need to make things happen with this phone line? Well, for one, you need a phone. You can think of a really simple rotary or touch tone phone as a really simply web browser. With it, you can call out to other phone lines, automated phone menus, other people, etc. This is the same way that the internet works; with a simple web browser you can call out to other webpages, or you can log into simple infrastructure, such as your banking network or a simple social network.

But these days, people don't only want to engage in simple, straight forward calls; they want to collaborate; they want to engage each other; they want to meet new people; they want to do business. And in order to accomplish these things, you need to have a more sophisticated conglomerate of technologies behind you-but not just you, the people, companies, and things that you want to interact with need to be sophisticated as well.

See, a simple network of mere webpages doesn't necessarily make for a "cloud." An open source encyclopedia in which a collective or community contribute to, wouldn't make for a cloud. A cloud is a situation of tightly defined and accepted roles by both parties-the user and the server or service provider-. With a social networking site, roles are defined by the community by members voicing their opinions, and developers on the server side incorporating those opinions and voices.

The cloud also implies automation-so called smart technology. It's fine if a service performs a specific and incredibly sophisticated operation for you, but if that service requires you to manually run it each and every time-or rather program its settings for it to run properly, each and every time-then that's just a mere service; it's not a cloud service.

When people read "cloud service," they expect automation; they expect that service to work smoothly, efficiently, and in the background.

The Advent Of NFC Technology

NFC technology represents a set of standards specifically developed for smart phones and other similar devices such as iPads.
